Banana Shire celebrates Roma-Taroom milestone

A FIVE kilometre section of the Roma-Taroom Road in Queensland was recently sealed. Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the completion of the $1.7 million Dangarfield project, carried out by Banana Shire Council, would support industry and provide improved connectivity for property owners along the 149 km link.
The council was now working on a 2.5 km section at Hatchem Downs about 87 km north-east of the Carnarvon Highway turn-off.
Wallace said the road was originally intended to be widened only half of the distance from the Carnarvon Highway turn-off at the Roma end. Following a value management workshop with the community, there was considerable local support to maximise the sealed length between Roma and Taroom.
By the end of the project, road users will be able to drive a majority of the distance between Roma and Taroom on a sealed road with less than 15 km remaining unsealed.
The $30 million project is due for completion in mid 2010, weather permitting.
