Burrumbeet upgrade contract now out to tender for Western Highway duplication

VICROADS says works on the Western Highway duplication between Ballarat and Stawell are set to start early-2010, with the first contract now out to tender.

According to VicRoads, the first contract to extend the four-lane divided highway is for an 8km section through to Burrumbeet. The Federal Government has committed $404m towards the duplication project.

VicRoads says it is working in partnership with the State Government to deliver the upgrade, and over coming years the Western Highway will be progressively upgraded along its full 109km length through to Stawell.

Under current plans, construction is said to be largely on the northern side of the highway, creating a new two-lane carriageway for Ballarat-bound traffic, with the existing highway converted to carry two lanes of west-bound traffic.

Works on this section is scheduled to commence early 2010 with the first section, between Ballarat to Burrumbeet completed in early 2012.
