LEIGHTON Contractors says it has been selected by Transurban Group as preferred contractor for the $550m upgrade of Hills M2 motorway in North West Sydney.
According to Leighton, under the agreement it will deliver the environmental planning, design and construction of the upgrade project. The selection reinforces its track record in the development of Sydney’s major arterial roads such as the Eastern Distributor, Westlink M7 and Windsor Road.
Leighton says its selection as preferred contractor is the culmination of more than 12 months work with Transurbanscoping the Hills M2 upgrade and cements its leadership in major roads infrastructure in NSW.
Subject to environmental approvals, the Hills M2 upgrade incorporates the widening of existing sections of the roadway from two to three lanes including the Norfolk Rd twin tunnels, the addition of new access ramps, and the upgrade of operational management and control systems.
Work on the environmental approval process is said to commence immediately, which will be carried out in parallel with the detailed design. Construction of the Hills M2 upgrade is scheduled to take two years following environmental approvals and financial close on funding for the project which are expected late-2010.
Leighton Contractors says the completion of the upgrade is expected late-2012.
The Hills M2 upgrade project includes new west facing Windsor road on and off ramps. Additional eastbound lanes from Windsor Road to Pennant Hills Rd and from Pennant Hills Rd through M2 Tunnel to Lane Cove Rd which includes a T2 / Bus Lane from Terrys Creek.
The infrastructure upgrade also includes an upgrade of intelligent transport systems which support the Hills M2’s operation and control.
