New Bridge over Mulgrave River open

THE NEW bridge over the Mulgrave River is now open to traffic, eight months ahead of schedule.

Federal Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Anthony Albanese says the early delivery of the $48m piece of infrastructure is a significant achievement for Queensland’s far north.

Mr Albanese says the new 480 metre-long bridge is part of the Rudd Government's commitment to improving flood immunity and accessibility between Cairns and Townsville.

The new Mulgrave River bridge stands five metres higher than the existing bridge and is located on a better road alignment.

The project was part of the Australian Government's $348m Accelerated Bruce Highway Upgrade Package.

The works in the package are designed to improve flood immunity on the Bruce Highway and reduce the duration of road closures in the region due to flooding in the wet season.

The new bridge is to be named by the community in June as part of Queensland’s 150th birthday celebrations.
