SPEEDING drivers on Queensland’s Nambour Connection Road will be shamed into slowing down with the installation of a confronting new speed activated sign near the Blackall Street intersection in coming months.
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace said the sign is part of a $1 million road safety project to slow motorists down when approaching the intersection, which was the site of a tragic crash last year that killed four people.
The safety project was developed after an independent report into the crash found that traffic signals could not be safely installed at this intersection unless motorists slowed down.
The speed activated signs will initially target the top 15 per cent of speeding motorists by flashing a reminder of the speed limit where they are travelling too fast for the road conditions. The sign will display the speed limit - 70 - and the words 'slow down'. It is hoped this sign will influence driver behaviour in a bid to increase safety at the intersection.
In addition to the speed activated sign, a set of speed detection loops will be installed in the coming weeks. This will allow us to monitor the speed of motorists at this intersection.
Over the coming months, the department will also install a Woombye entrance sign, road lighting and more vegetation along the roadside.
"If we can't get motorists to slow down and obey speed limits, we will have no choice but to close the intersection and stop traffic from turning right into Blackall Street,” said Wallace.
