Stage two of the Bundaberg Ring Road upgrade weeks away from opening

QUEENSLAND Minister for Main Roads, Craig Wallace says the opening of the second stage of the Bundaberg Ring Road upgrade is weeks away from opening.

According to the Minister, the $100m Ring Road project will take heavy vehicles away from CBD streets. It is the biggest single road investment a State Government has ever made in Bundaberg.

The Minister says over the next few weeks, roadworkers will complete the bitumen surfacing, install guardrail and carry out linemarking before applying the final touches.

Wallace says the construction of stage two began in July 2008 and includes the construction of 6.9km of a new 10m wide bitumen-sealed road, and a new bridge over Clayton Road and the north coast railway line.

Construction of the full project is said to have begun in November 2007 and was originally scheduled for completion in December 2009. The project will have sustained around 750 direct and indirect jobs during the 23-month construction period.

The Minister says once complete, the ring road will provide heavy vehicle operators with an efficient freight route, improving access to the Port of Bundaberg, and improving road safety and efficiency in Bundaberg's central business district.
