QUEENSLAND’S Main Roads is in the process of improving heavy vehicle rest area’s across the South West.

The body has recently installed nine toilets on various highways including the Carnarvon Highway.

The state government says the rest areas are vital to ensure the safety of heavy vehicle drivers as well as other motorists. Main Roads says driving tired is a factor in many crashes and it is vital to be alert when travelling.

The authority says heavy vehicle rest areas allow truck drivers to take a decent rest break or sleep or alternatively take short breaks or simply check their loads.

The group advises driver’s to watch for signs of fatigue such as drowsiness, aches and pains, tired eyes, and loss of concentration. As soon as you feel tired, stop and rest.

The authority advises motorists to take rest breaks of at least 15 minutes every two hours.
